In a simple explanation the Domain Names are used to identify one or more IP addresses. 

The Domain Name is a unique set of characters that identifies a specific website, it can use in URLs to identify particular Web pages. In other word, a Domain Name has the same relationship to a website as a street address to a house or a name to a person. 

By the way of enter a domain name into web browser, the browser will access a domain name server (DNS) to find the location of the corresponding website on the internet, it will retrieve the website and display it to customer. Just a little like look for someone through a phone book to find out how to call them or where the house of their target place is.
